December 2015

Decemeber was a bit abnormal in terms of flow and variation. It included my reverse taper for Desert Solstice (DS), Desert Solstice 100 Mile Track Race, and recovery/end of season. With DS being on the 19th, this month was more about not making any drastic mistakes as it was more about recovery and minor final preporations.

The reason I do a reverse taper for big races is because I find that a more traditional taper of 2-3 weeks often leaves me feeling flat. My personal belief is that many people do a bit too much in training and need a big 2-3 rest period to recover from their training in order to feel good for their race, but in doing so find themselves less sharp on the starting line. Afterall, three weeks is a long time to bot be doing key workouts. For this reason, I try to hit peak training about three weeks out from a race and take the biggest rest week immediately after that last big block. This allows me to recovery from the last big training block and have two weeks to do a few key hard sessions leading into the race. These sessions won't wreck me, but they will keep my body sharp and ready to race. You can see this on my training log; as after my big three week block of 169, 144, 145 miles I had my smallest week in quite some time of 63 miles. This week was followed by a 90 mile week with a couple sharpening workouts (track progression and hybrid). The final week leading in I always listen to my body. I take the rest I need and always check my legs for a sharp snappy feeling, which tells me it's time to race.

The final two weeks of December culminated with my race at Desert Solstice and some easy running for recovery.
